Generally when on the turbo, which is where I do 75% or more of my cycling, I either don’t listen to anything or listen to cycling training podcasts. This is a summary of the ones I listen to regularly. Now updated to have URL links in.
I have listed them as they appear on my Pocket Casts app.
Team Oxygen Addict
Coach Rob Wilby used to do this in partnership with Helen Murray and I did think that it was an better podcast when they were together. I did listen to Helen’s individual podcast – Inside Tri – when she started it up but I felt there was too much emphasis on sponsorship, Patreon and buying her a coffeee before she had produced content.
Back to Oxygen Addict. Some really good interviews. Rob is a true triathlon fan and gets some great interviews. Highly recommended
Xert Breakthrough Lab
You might think that this is only really of interest to those who use Xert but there is some interesting content that is useful to many. Probably not frequent enough to be one of my top three.
TrainerRoad – Ask a Cycling Coach
Some many people say they subscribe to TR because of the value they get from the podcast. It is very good but it has been improved by the arrival of Amber Pierce (Amber Malika). It was getting a bit stale but she has brightened it up. Probably the thing that I like least is the focus on crit and other forms of racing. That will apppeal to many others though.
That Triathlon Show
There is no two ways about it, this is the best of the podcasts I listen to. Lots of insightful information, some great interviews and plenty of episodes to listen to, In fact Kolie Moore (Emprirical Cycling) said it is the podcast he listens to the most. Also known as Scientific Triathlon
FastCat Cycling Training Tips
Frank Overton , the man who came up with the name ‘sweetspot’. A really good podcast – lots of interest, some good Q and A sessions and really a do not miss podcast
ZwiftCast
I still listen to this even though I dont use Zwift now. I know Simon Schofield as we were both in the same Leeds cycling club – Alba Rosa and I still follow it.
Cycling Time Trial
A very low key podcast fronted by Mark Florence, mostly based on time-trialling and the equipment used. If you want to try a couple of sample episodes listen to those featuring Tim Ramsden (Black Cat Cycling). He is a UK based coach and is very knowledgeable and informative.
Simon Ward – The Triathlon Coach
Another Leeds based podcaster and one who has coached the Brownlees. He gets lots of interesting people on for interviews and whilst I don’t listen to every episode I always see what is available.
Fast Talk
This came out of the Velonews podcasts and Coach Trevor Connor talks a lot of good sense. Well worth listening to – lots of good Q & A podcasts
Empirical Cycling
Probably too scientifically deep for me but I generally enjoy the first 10 minutes of each deep dive before I start gettig out of my depth. The speaker is Kolie Moore who certainly knows his stuff.
Summary
So that nicely comes to a total of 10. I would recommend any of these as being worth a listen. You might think that I am a triathlete from the ones I have listed and I have done some but I dont run any more. I still like listening to tri stuff though and the training principles are pretty much the same as for time-trialling which I am interested in.
In third place is a very low-key podcast – Mark Florence’s Cycling Time Trial
In second place I am battling between TrainerRoad, Oxygen Addict but I have decided to go with Frank Overton’s Fastcat Podcast
My undoubted favourite is Mikeal Errikson’s That Triathlon Show
